Teacher Fired for Mock student shootings

A professor was having a discussion with his students about the Virginia Tech shootings and pointed to some students and said "pow". The discussion also included gun control and controling violence with violence http://news.aol.com/topnews/articles/_a/professor-fired-after-mock-student/20070424002309990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001.

The following Friday he received a letter from the college stating that he was fired. It seems like the college, which is a Catholic liberal arts college, did not want any negative publicity for what the professor did and took action immediately.

Now the college is getting some heat for firing the professor and not allowing free discussion. One student said that the discussion was not offensive and the professor was simply illustrating a point during the discussion.

Was the college right in firing him?

While the actions of the teacher may have been insensitive to the current political and social environment that has evolved since the shootings, I do feel that it was a knee-jerk reaction on the part of the school, and in the end, harmful to its image.

I agree. It would be nice to have a chance to defend yourself before being fired.

Schools are so worried about ending up on the wrong side of a controversy that they've lost their spines.
